Here are some ways to continue your child’s reading and writing growth over the
summer.

Make time for reading
Set aside a quiet time each day for reading, and remember to include "reading time"
when planning summer activities.

Keep it fun
Don't set rules about reading for a certain amount of time or reading a minimum
number of pages, and don't make reading a punishment — keep it fun so that it's
something that your child wants to keep doing!

Read aloud every day
Share books together as a family. Children will benefit from hearing others read aloud
and from reading aloud to others.

Model for your child
Make sure your child sees you reading and writing, such as reading a magazine or
writing a shopping list.
Talk about what your child is reading
Ask your child to tell you about what she is reading.

Listen to audio books
If you will be spending a lot of time in the car or at home, borrow audiobooks from SORA or the public library. This can be a great way to encourage language development and to enjoy books together. SORA is accessible on the student dashboard or can be added as an app to a tablet/chromebook/phone. When logging in, your student will choose “Adams 12” as their school.

Write
Encourage your child to write letters or postcards to friends and relatives over the
summer, to keep a journal, make a summer scrapbook, or to write stories and poems.
Visit the school library and/or help your child get a library card at the public library.
Participate in the Anythink Library My Summer Reading Program.
