Operation Book Donation

What is it?  Operation Book Donation originated with our Giving Committee and got its name from the Silver Creek students.  The concept behind Operation Book Donation is to provide new books to students who may not have access to reading materials.  Each year, our school “adopts” another elementary school and reaches out with a variety of charitable events, backpacks, school supplies, books, etc. 

When does it take place?  Operation Book Donation occurs during the month of December and concludes during the classroom holiday celebrations held on December 21, 2023.  As one of the classroom activities during the holiday party, each student wraps the new book with festive wrapping paper, and also designs a card to go with the present.

Why does it take place?  One goal of the Giving Committee (made up of parents and staff members) is to teach our students to participate in charitable projects and to reach out and help others in need.  We hope to instill the spirit of giving, especially during the holiday season.  The “adopted” school in our district, Thornton Elementary, has a much higher percentage rate of poverty (86%) when compared to Silver Creek (7%).

How does it happen?  This is where we need your help!  If every student in our school brings a new book between December 1 and December 21, we can provide a brand new book to every single child at our “adopted” elementary school when they return to school following the winter break.

Where do I buy a book?  Books can be purchased for as little as $1.00 through the Scholastic Book Order forms sent home in your child’s Friday Folders.  Books can also be purchased at the local book stores and grocery stores.  Please contact your child’s teacher if you need assistance with ideas on where to purchase books for this exciting charitable project.  We are encouraging each child to bring in a new book appropriate to his/her grade level and interest.

What else is needed?  Please check with your child’s teacher to determine if donations of wrapping paper, cards, and tape are needed for this project.
