Silver Creek staff hold event to listen to students
- Empower
- Focus on Students
Recently, the leadership at Silver Creek Elementary held an event to hear from students about their community.
Mrs. Herd (Social-Emotional Learning Specialist), Mrs. Sampson (Assistant Principal), and Mr. Oliver (Principal) met with a group of eight 5th grade students for our annual Safety Summit. Our district has asked each school to conduct their own Safety Summit with students (starting with 5th graders). Our topics were: What makes our school safe, how do you feel safe at school, how could our school be more safe and anything else.
They were very impressed with many of the students’ answers such as:
- “I feel safe when teachers know things about me”
- “I feel safe when my friends are with me”
- “Our school is safe because the staff cares about us”
- “Our school is safe because of the rules”
- “We could make our school more safe by students talking more respectfully to each other”
- “We could make our school more safe by speaking to the paras at recess.”
Hearing student voices is an important part of the success our school!
This story exemplifies our ELEVATE Focus Area: Safe Schools. Sharing stories about how the district supports student learning by providing a safe and secure environment.
