Silver Creek Library
Summer is here! Let's get outside and play, explore new places, dive into creative projects and.... let's READ!
Dr. Richard L. Allington, a leader in reading research, explains "children who do not read in the summer lose two to three months of reading development a year, while students who do read gain a month of reading proficiency. The result is a three- to four-month gap every year, which will snowball into a 1 1/2-year gap between the time children complete kindergarten and the time they finish fifth grade." Let's not let our Silver Creek students slide over the summer!
Due to upcoming renovations and upgrades, the Silver Creek library will not be open over the 2019 summer. However, there are many ways to keep your children reading over the summer! Here are a few ideas:
Visit any of the Anythink Library branches or Bookmobile stops. Anythink offers a summer program called "mySummer2019." This year, they are partnering with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science to provide interactive experiences throughout the summer. If you register for "mySummer2019," students will get a free ticket to the museum.
Barnes & Noble offers an incentive of a free book for students who read 8 books over the summer. Record your progress on a summer journal and bring it to any Barnes & Noble to receive your free book. You can also find book suggestions online for kids ages 0 - 7 and ages 8 - 12. Most Barnes & Nobles stores also offer storytime events!
BookBar is an independent bookseller located in North Denver on Tennyson street. BookBar has been exceptionally generous toward Silver Creek this year and has provided our school with multiple author visits for free! BookBar offers storytime throughout the summer. Click here for the storytime schedule. We invite you to a special storytime on Wednesday, July 31st, at 10:30 AM, when some of our very own Silver Creek teachers will be reading aloud during storytime!
